Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is an innovative injectable medication designed for weight loss and blood sugar control. It mimics natural GLP-1 and GIP hormones in your gut, helping control your appetite and making you feel fuller for longer. When paired with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, it results in effective, healthy weight loss.
How does Mounjaro® work?
Mounjaro® is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that enhances insulin secretion, reduces glucagon levels, slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite, and increases feelings of fullness, helping control blood sugar levels and promote weight loss.
Who is Mounjaro® suitable for?
Mounjaro® is suitable for adults with a BMI over 30 or a BMI over 27 with weight-related health concerns such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, or raised cholesterol. It is not intended for individuals with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. If you have type 2 diabetes and a BMI less than 27, Mounjaro® cannot be prescribed for weight loss.
How to use the Mounjaro® pens?
Mounjaro® is an injectable medication that comes in a pre-filled pen for once-weekly use on the same day each week. It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm at any time of day, with or without food. The pen is simple to use, with small needles making it relatively pain-free. Instructions are provided with your first order, and a clinical team is available to answer any questions.
Dosage Guide
Treatment starts at a low dose and increases every four weeks. The starting dose is 2.5 mg once a week for four weeks, then increasing every four weeks until the recommended dose of 15 mg a week is reached. The clinical team will review your weight with every order to ensure optimal dosing. Continued prescription requires a weight loss of around 5% of your initial body weight after a specified period.
How effective is Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro® is one of the most effective weight loss treatments, with studies showing an average weight loss of 20.9% over 36 weeks and 25.3% over 88 weeks. It has been shown to be twice as effective as Wegovy® and Ozempic® in a study of people with type 2 diabetes on metformin.
Ordering Mounjaro® for the first time
Upon first ordering Mounjaro®, you will receive a pen containing your initial four doses for 28 days of treatment. It must be stored in a refrigerator between 2-8°C. Each order includes:
– Four needles (one for each injection)
– Swabs to clean your skin before injecting
– An instruction leaflet
Increasing your dose
After three weeks of using Mounjaro®, you will be reminded to order your next pen and complete a weight loss consultation. If you respond well to treatment, your dose will be increased, and you will receive a new pen in temperature-controlled packaging. Continued monitoring of your weight ensures the treatment’s effectiveness. At your highest tolerated dose for six months, a 5% weight loss is required for continued prescription.
How to dispose of used needles
Dispose of needles in the provided sharps bin after each use. Once the pen is empty, it can be discarded in household waste or the sharps bin. Full sharps bins should be collected by your local council for safe disposal. Additional sharps bins can be purchased with new orders.
How to store Mounjaro®?
Store Mounjaro® in the refrigerator at 2-8°C. It can be kept unrefrigerated for up to 21 days, but it is recommended to return the pen to the fridge after each use. Do not freeze Mounjaro®.
Potential side effects of Mounjaro®
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhoea, usually settling after a few weeks. To reduce these side effects, doses are gradually increased every four weeks. Measures such as getting fresh air, sipping cold drinks, and eating smaller, regular meals can help.
Uncommon side effects (1 in 100 people) may include:
– Increased risk of gallstone disease
– Pancreatitis
– Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
– Severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis
– Diabetic retinopathy changes in vision
Rare side effects (1 in 1,000 people) include:
– Kidney-related issues, such as reduced function and failure
Immediate medical attention is necessary for serious side effects like difficulty breathing or severe abdominal pain. For more information on side effects, consult the full medical information sheet for Mounjaro®.
